Bird-watching in Kulen Promtemp

For bird-lovers, Kulen Promtep - one of the few remaining places where you can see the critically endangered Giant Ibis – deserves more than a flying visit.

Covering an area of over 4,000km, the Kulen Promtemp Wildlife Sanctuary is the largest protected area in Cambodia. A combination of lowland forest and swampland, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) have primarily concentrated on turning this into one of Cambodia's most important birding sites. Over 150 bird species have been spotted in the area, including the extremely rare giant ibis -thought to be extinct until the late 1990s - making this a birdwatcher's paradise.

Those of an ornithological persuasion can stay within the Wildlife Sanctuary itself in a community eco-lodge. This will allow plenty of opportunities to speak to conservationists and get involved with community conservation work and explore the sanctuary and wider area at your leisure. There are ample opportunities for bird-watching - other species spotted here include the Greater Adjutant and White-Winged Duck. As well as birding, choose from cycling or trekking around the 12th Century Baray, hiking in the hilltops, exploring temple ruins or take a boat out with local fisherman to learn their traditional methods.

For optimum bird-watching opportunities, visit between January and April.
