Bird-watching in the Bengal Florican Grasslands Conservation Area

Talk to local conservationists about their efforts to preserve the critically endangered Bengal Florican in Cambodia.

Located north of Siem Reap in the Kampong Thom and Siem Reap provinces, the Bengal Florican Grasslands Conservation Area is home to the world's largest concentration of Bengal Florican. The Bengal Florican - also known as the Bengal Bustard - is a large grassland bird that is currently on the list of critically endangered species due to rapid loss of habitat and hunting. It is therefore a high priority for conservation in Cambodia and a significant amount of work is currently being carried out by conservationists in this area to conserve and protect this breed.

In addition to having the chance to witness these birds in their natural habitat, visitors to Cambodia can learn more about the incredible work carried out by Sam Veasna, who rediscovered and pioneered efforts to preserve and protect this magnificent breed. The lush grasslands are also home to a plethora of other unique and interesting bird species, including the Greater Adjutant and Painted Stork, and keen ornithologists may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the majestic Sarus Crane, said to be the tallest of all flying birds.
