Inside Vietnam: Cambodia Laos

Sleeper train

Travel the old-fashioned way aboard a gently trundling overnight train through the Vietnamese countryside.

Travelling by sleeper train in Vietnam can be a real trip highlight if you're a fan of overland travel.

Whichever service you travel on, each train carriage typically holds eight four-berth cabins in a two-up, two-down configuration. each passenger has a bed (berth), and there is a shared unisex toilet at the end of each train carriage. Although not luxurious, Vietnam's sleeper trains are perfectly comfortable and are a social and novel way to travel though Vietnam. It is common for local sellers to pass through the train selling snacks and refreshments, and sharing a local beer with your cabin is a great way to start your journey.

If you're after a little more luxury, the opulent Victoria Express charts a route from Hanoi into the northern highlands, complete with beautiful décor and a dedicated dining car.
