Cycling around the imperial tombs of Hue

Cycling around the imperial tombs of Hue

Exploring by bike is a great way to discover the elegant tombs of the Nguyen Emperors, scattered throughout the countryside around Hue.

As the last royal capital of Vietnam and home to the Nguyen Emperors from 1802-1945, Hue is surrounded by the elaborate and beautiful tombs of its former rulers, making it the perfect place to get out of the city and explore the countryside on two wheels.

Head out through the centre of town along Le Loi Street past the impressive French-built Quoc Hoc High School, attended many important statesmen of Vietnam. Continue through the Catholic Quarter of the city and past the imposing Phu Cam Church, where a local country-style market takes place each day, before riding on to Quoc An pagoda, one of the oldest Buddhist foundations in central Vietnam.

Follow country lanes into the countryside, past Buddhist pagodas and shrines, to arrive at Khai Dinh's tomb - well-known for its intricate mosaic tiles and European-influenced Oriental design. After visiting the tomb, ride on to the craft village of Da Khe, which specialises in traditional bamboo handicrafts. From here you can take a short trip by boat across a reservoir for the 2 km ride to Gia Long's tomb, which is known for its distinctive architecture and beautiful natural setting.

Leaving the tomb, cycle along the northern, pine-lined bank of the Perfume River to board a local ferry to the other side, where you'll visit the tomb of King Thieu Tri. The third king of the Nguyen Dynasty, Thieu Tri was also the luckiest - as he inherited a stable and strong administration from the previous ruler, King Minh Mang.

Finally, from here you can pedal on to the tomb of Tu Duc. This king was a learned poet and chose an asymmetrical, romantic architectural style for his last resting place. From this tomb you can ride to nearby villages specialising in incense stick making and bronze casting before returning to Hue.
