Mandalao Elephant Sanctuary

An intimate and up-close encounter with these gentle giants deep in the Lao jungle.

With a focus on responsible travel, elephant camps in Asia are a delicate issue for us. The Mandalao Sanctuary near to Luang Prabang is however, more than just a camp, it's a non-riding elephant experience focused on education and animal welfare.

They have seven elephants ranging from a one year old baby to an elderly 60 year old, and offer a variety of personal experiences with this magnificent creatures. You will be met at your hotel by their specialist guide and transferred to a beautiful elephant oasis just 40 minutes outside of Luang Prabang. On arrival you'll receive a brief orientation and introduction to the sanctuary by one of the directors, learning the challenges they've faced and how they are trying to improve the situation one elephant at a time. Then you will spend the rest of the morning with the elephants and their mahouts, witnessing the unique bond that they have established while trekking with them through rice paddies and meandering creeks, also getting the incredible opportunity to feed and bath the elephants in the river. After saying goodbye to your pachyderm friends, you'll head back to camp overlooking the Nam Khan River, where a tasty lunch of local specialties awaits you before transferring back to town in the early afternoon.
