Imperial History In Hue

Explore the great Imperial Citadel and Thien Mu Pagoda, set on the banks of the Perfume River.

The day tour reveals the fascinating history of Hue town. You will discover the Imperial Citadel where the Nguyen Dynasty ruled between 1802 and 1945, explore the ?Old City' by cylo and cruise up the Perfume River, named for the fragrance of tropical flowers carried down from orchards upriver, to the Thien Mu (Celestial Lady) Pagoda.

Constructed in 1601 the 21-meter tall tower is the centerpiece of the Thien Mu Pagoda and represents seven reincarnations of Buddha. In the grounds of the pagoda is the Austin car made famous when in 1963, a resident monk drove the vehicle to what was then Saigon to protest against the southern regime, the photo of his self-immolation was captured and became one of the defining images of the war.

The Nguyen Emperors who reigned over Vietnam from Hue left behind them a collection of architecturally varied tombs scattered throughout the area. You will view the tombs is via the delightful cruise on the Perfume River. Though their individual designs reflected both the period and individual tastes of the respective emperors, they all were designed to follow the basic rules of geomancy. Amongst the common elements to be found are courtyards of stone effigies, a pavillion housing eulogies, a temple containing an altar for worshipping and the tomb itself.
