Cookery class in Hoi An

Hoi An boasts enough excellent restaurants to keep you in foodie heaven for weeks - why not try your hand at creating your own gastronomic delights?

Central Vietnam is often regarded as the birthplace of modern Vietnamese cuisine. The story goes that when King Hung Vuong VI became fed up of eating the same rice dishes again and again, he held a competition between his 22 sons to choose his successor. The king would pass the crown to the son who produced the best and most unusual dish.

The old capital of Hue is now known for its creation of delicious bite-sized morsels of delicate rice cakes, dumplings and a huge variety of intricate and imaginative sharing dishes. Hoi An too is known for its delicious cuisine. In Vietnam dishes are ordered and shared together between the table, which is a fantastic way to enjoy and taste as many dishes as possible.

There are several restaurants in Hoi An offering cookery classes, but we have a couple of real favourites, both of which include a visit to Hoi An's colourful central market to experience the amazing sights, sounds and aromas.

The Red Bridge Cookery class includes a leisurely cruise (25 minutes) along the lovely Thu Bon River to the Red Bridge Cooking School. The cooking class is an interesting and fun way to learn about the local cuisine. The class lasts about two hours and includes demonstrations from the school's chefs, then a chance to cook some dishes and enjoy the lunch you've created.

Another popular choice are the intimate classes run by the enthusiastic chef Van at the Green Bamboo school, a little way from the town centre.
