Exploring the Mekong's Hidden Side

Escape the tourists and travel into a rarely-explored and incredibly picturesque part of Laos.

Luang Prabang is the historical and spiritual capital of Laos, with its picturesque pagodas and orange robed monks wandering its ancient streets. Whilst taking in the town's old quarter is an absolute must for anyone visiting this incredible country, the surrounding rural villages and countryside are all but untouched by tourists, providing a true insight to Laotian history and culture.

Traveling by tuk-tuk, we will take you away from the tourism-dominated areas of Luang Prabang and cross the Mekong River by ferry boat to a rarely-explored part of Laos. Venture up the western banks of the Mekong River, stopping at the ancient temples of Wat Chom Phet and Wat Long Khoun, once used by the King as a peaceful retreat. Built at the same time as Luang Prabang's Wat Xieng Thong, this royal temple features unique mural paintings that are remarkably well-preserved.

Head further away from civilisation, travel down dirt roads and drive through the countryside, stopping off at the ethnic villages of the Khmu and Hmong people, where you will have the opportunity to meet with the local residents who rely on the land for survival. Gain insight into their daily lives which remain largely untouched by the modern world and ancient traditions still guide their actions.

Finally take a relaxing boat ride all the way back to the ancient town of Luang Prabang, Sitting back and admiring the picturesque landscapes and river villages as they pass by.
