Insider Experience: Art and architecture of Phnom Penh

Meet an art "Insider", a galley curator, for a deep unstanding of Cambodia's evolving art and architecture scene

Like most South-East Asian cities, it's no surprise that Phnom Penh is home to a host of French colonial buildings, Chinese shop houses and indigenous structures made of bamboo and local wood. But less acknowledged until recently are the 1950s and 60s buildings known as the New Khmer style that wouldn't seem out of place in an episode of Mad Men. On this "Insider" day tour we'll explore the remember Phnom Penh's artistic heyday in the post-colonial Golden Era, before it was extinguished by the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s.

After lunch at a stylish restaurant, our focus will switch to the contemporary art scene beginning with the city's hidden street art. Towards the end of the day, you'll meet a true Phnom Penh "Insider". Dana Langlois is the founding director of Java Arts. Over a coffee or a glass of wine, Dana will talk about the capital's art scene, and the ways local artists are expressing their creativity and pulling away from the mainstream.

Dana has spent over a decade focusing on contemporary Cambodia art, she curates shows for emerging artists, research arts practices in Cambodia and produces exhibitions and projects throughout the country. Dana founded Java Art Gallery in 2000 and since has gone on to found Sala Artspace, an experimental gallery and studio and develop the Our City Festival.
