Shan State Adventure

13 Nights: from US$2936 Trip Code: SHA0001

Our most challenging itinerary to date, Shan State Adventure is not for the faint-hearted. Set in Burma's lush highlands, your fortitude will be tested as you hike, bike and kayak through mountains, valleys, lakes and rivers, surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. Beginning in Pyin Oo Lwin, a former colonial hill station where the British once escaped the heat of the summer months, you will embark on a journey along the old Burma Railway, stopping for two days of exploration in Hsipaw and concluding in Lashio. This train journey is widely considered to be one of the most spectacular in the world, trundling through the mountains and across the Goteik Viaduct - an extraordinary feat of colonial engineering that spans a 300-metre-deep gorge.

From Lashio you will fly out to Kalaw, where you will spend the day at the Green Hill elephant camp helping to feed, clean and care for the former logging elephants who are living out their retirement in this peaceful sanctuary.

Next you'll move on to Pindaya, famous for its caves stuffed with over 8,000 Buddha statues of all different sizes, dating from the 18th century to the present day. From here it's on to Nyaung Shwe, the gateway to Inle Lake, with a challenging day's cycle through a region inhabited by many different ethnic minorities.

You'll have a day to explore the Inle region, with a boat trip to the local morning markets and a chance to kayak on the lake, before setting off for an overnight hike to the Pa'O village of Hti Ne. It's a pretty tough hike, but you'll have this unspoilt region of the country all to yourself, making it worth every bit of effort.

You'll round off your trip with a final night at Inle Lake - the perfect place to toast the end of a fantastic, active holiday.
