Inside Burma Tours

Trek to Hti Ne

For an authentic and thoroughly un-touristy hiking experience in the Burmese countryside, join CIT in the Pa'O region.

CIT, or Community Involved Tourism, are a recently established group who aim to promote sustainable tourism in the Pa'O region near Inle Lake. The Inle Lake area is known for its beauty, but in recent years has developed a reputation for being rather well-trodden and overtouristed. CIT are working to develop alternative, small-scale tourism projects in the area, which will bring jobs and income to impoverished local communities without causing a huge influx of irresponsible tourism and unsustainable development.

The trek from Inle Lake to Hti Ne begins by longtail boat, as you are collected bright and early from your hotel. As you disembark on the lakeshore, you'll be met by a Pa'O trekking guide and begin your journey through bamboo forests and picturesque farming villages, stopping off to learn about local industries, admire the fabulous views, and chat to the locals as you go. On arrival at Hti Ne, you can either break for lunch (a delicious Pa'O traditional spread) or opt to break your journey overnight at CIT's simple but comfortable B&B (please note there is no hot water).

Whether you choose to stay in Hti Ne or head back after lunch, you'll complete your loop through forests and across streams to return to your starting point, where you'll be collected by longtail boat.

Of all the trekking experiences in the Inle and Pindaya region, this is undoubtedly one of the best. The scenery is just as stunning as any other route, and yet you probably won't see a single tourist from start to finish.
