Inside Burma Tours

Insider Experience: Hsithe rural fishing village

Travel to a small village in the countryside to try your hand at fishing. You might even spot an Irrawaddy dolphin.

Get off the tourist trail and travel to the village of Hsithe, population 3,000. About three hours by road and boat from Mandalay, you won't find Hsithe on a map - yet this is a wonderful place to learn about rural life in Burma. In exchange this tourism project brings economic benefits to the community.

On arrival, you'll meet the local fishermen and women, and watch a live demonstration of their characteristic net-throwing technique, before having the chance to try it yourself. Trust us, it's not as easy as it looks!

Fishing is Hsithe's main industry - there are four generations of fishermen and women in the village from age 18 to 70. But after a picnic lunch, you'll also see plenty of other activities going on including peanut and rice farming, cigar rolling, jam-making, peanut oil production and the sewing of tailored clothes and fishing nets. With an "Insider" guide - a local resident - you'll have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and learn more about these cottage industries. This is also a great place to pick up authentic souvenirs, from carved dolphins to mango jam and cheroots, as all the produce on sale here is produced in the village by hand.

Finally, don't forget to keep your eyes peeled today for the local bird life (binoculars and bird identification sheets are available from the Visitors' Centre) and a sighting of the rare Irrawaddy dolphins who still call these waters home!
