Inside Burma Tours
Pindaya village cookery school

Pindaya village cookery school

It's not all about the grottoes (or mythical giant spiders) in Pindaya; learn to rustle up some Shan State delights at a home cookery class.

The delightful lakeside town of Pindaya in rolling Shan State is best known for the spectacular Buddhist grottoes, set in a steep hillside overlooking the town. For those making the journey to the area, however, a lovely addition to consider is a cooking class at a small home-based restaurant in a peaceful village a short drive from town.

The set-up is clean and professional, located in a delightfully rural setting, surrounded by farms and houses. Shan cooking differs from the oily curries found in other parts of Burma, focussing on lots of fresh vegetables and herbs. A favourite to try is the lovely local river fish steamed in cabbage parcels - your friendly hosts will lead you through step by step, supplementing your own efforts at lunch with other delicious Shan dishes you're unlikely to have sampled elsewhere.
