Putao is the northernmost town in Kachin State, located on the banks of the Namlaung River and surrounded by the foothills of the Himalayas. This is the starting point for some of Burma's most adventurous expeditions, and a beautiful introduction to rural Burma.
“Located in one of the most northern parts of Burma, access to Putao is allowed by permit only - making it one of the most untouched and little visited regions in the country.”
Charlotte Bower, Travel Consultant
The town of Putao is ringed by snow-capped mountains, where keen mountaineers will find the popular climbing destinations of Mount Hkakabo Razi and Mount Gam Lan Razi. At lower altitudes, the region is a haven for exotic flora and fauna, including rare orchids (such as the "Black Orchid") and animal species such as the takin goat-antelope and the red panda.
Though the rest of Kachin State continues to experience armed clashes between rebel forces and the Burmese government, Putao's remote, inaccessible location (it is reachable only by air for tourists) means that it is perfectly safe for travel. This is a beautiful location to trek through lush forests, take river cruises through stunning gorges, experience village life in the hills, and even pay a visit to a local elephant conservation centre.
Visitors to this distant corner of Burma are few, making this a destination for the adventurous in search of a truly unique experience.
