Inside Burma Tours

Located on the eastern bank of the Chindwin River, some 80 miles northwest of Mandalay, Monywa is a popular stopping point on Irrawaddy river cruises. It is also famous as the home of the world's second-tallest Buddha statue, the Laykyun Setkyar.

“The Mohnyin Thambuddhei Paya temple here is rumoured to have over 500,000 images of Buddha, but we stopped counting after a while!”

Charlotte Bower, Travel Consultant

In recent years, Monywa has grown into a major hub for Burmese trade with India - thanks to its fortuitous riverside location. There has been a settlement in this spot since the Bagan period (9th-13th century), and legend has it that the name Monywa (which roughly translates as "cake village") came about when a local king fell in love with a cake seller from the area.

Monywa has several notable attractions - the most prominent (by a long way!) being the Laykyun Setkyar standing Buddha at the Bodhi Tataung monastery. Built between 1995 and 2008 and clocking in at a mega 130 metres (427 ft), this dazzling gold-and-white monolith is the second-tallest statue in the world, outmeasured only by China's 153-metre (502 ft) Spring Buddha Statue. At the feet of the Laykyun Setkyar is a giant reclining Buddha, and construction of an equally massive sitting Buddha is reportedly planned to begin before long.

Another notable attraction in Monywa is the Mohnyin Thambuddhei Paya, a Buddhist temple with a large, ornate stupa resembling a more bright and sparkly version of Indonesia's Borobudur.
