Inside Burma Tours

Located at 1,481 metres (4,860 ft) above sea level, Mindat maintains a cool climate in summer while the Central Plains nearby are baking, making it a delightful if remote addition to any journey through Burma.

“Ever seen a man playing a bamboo flute with his nose?”

Charlotte Bower, Travel Consultant

The town of Mindat extends along the top of a mountain range close to Mount Victoria (Nat Ma Taung) National Park in southern Chin State.

Tall pine trees line the road approaching the town, while the distant mountains create a dramatic backdrop to the wooden houses. In this little-visited region, traditional Chin life continues with limited influence from the modern world. Many women wear beautiful Chin necklaces while some older women still wear enormous traditional Chin earrings.

Until the 1960s, it was a custom amongst some Chin peoples to tattoo the faces of women with black lines in distinctive patterns specific to their home tribes. The tradition was apparently developed in order to discourage kidnappings by invaders from neighbouring areas, but was later banned by the government. It's thought that in some areas the custom of facial tattooing survived until as recently as the 1990s, and you may still come across elderly women with tattooed faces around Mindat

For those in search of adventure and untouched regions of the country Mindat is well worth a visit.
