Kengtung (or Kyaing Tong) is located in a pleasant valley in remote Eastern Shan State, a short drive from the Thai border at Tachilek.
“This is a fantastic place to trek through the hills, visiting local villages with a diverse array of cultural practices and customs.”
James Mundy, PR & Marketing Manager
Founded in 1243, Kengtung was once the seat of a powerful kingdom that rivalled the more well-known Shan Kingdom of Chiang Mai. Its strategic location on key trade routes through Asia, chiefly between China and Siam, made the town an important and wealthy centre. Military Burma's isolation from the outside world curtailed Kengtung's growth, however, and the town's importance gradually waned into obscurity during the 20th century.
The local people in this region are predominately either Shan or Tai Khun, and speak a language similar to Thai. A number of ethnic groups inhabit the surrounding hills, continuing a traditional way of life that has changed very little over the centuries. Treks into the hills to visit these villages are a major draw for visitors to the area.
Kengtung town itself is set around the pleasant Naung Tung Lake, and retains many colonial-era buildings in addition to a large number of Buddhist pagodas. A visit to the bustling morning market is a great way to see local life in action, with some outstanding people-watching opportunities and plenty of interesting produce on sale.
