Located in the shadow of Mount Victoria (Nat Ma Taung), the clifftop village of Aye provides a scenic base for those tackling the 3,053 m summit.
“Aye is a great place to visit if you're a keen hiker planning to tackle the nearby Mount Victoria. Keep your eyes peeled for a glimpse of one of the legendary tattooed women of the Chin ethnic minority!”
James Mundy, PR & Marketing Manager
The village is situated within the Nat Ma Taung National Park, close to the border between Burma and India, which was established in 1994 to protect the region's delicate ecosystem.
Aye is home to one of the minority groups within Chin State where, until recently, facial tattooing was common practice. The custom, which legend tells evolved as a way of dissuading men from neighbouring Rakhine kingdom from making off with Chin maidens, was officially banned in 1960 - but a small number of groups kept the tradition alive until at least as recently as the 1990s. Facial tattooing is a female-only practice, and each tribe has its own style - so that you can tell where a Chin woman comes from by her tattoos. You may still come across elderly tattooed women in the Mount Victoria region today.
Facilities in Aye are very basic, but for those in search of Burma's diverse traditions this is a beautiful and fascinating destination.
