Beautiful Burma

13 Nights: from US$3611 Trip Code: BB0001

Our Beautiful Burma tour visits the country's most celebrated destinations, combined with a few unusual twists to provide an in-depth introduction to Burma's friendly people, fascinating history and glorious scenery. Read more >

Eulogised by Kipling in the days of empire, Burma has spent much of the post-war period isolated from the outside world. With recent political reform has come a process of change, and this is gathering pace as confidence grows in a more secure and outward-looking future for the Burmese people. This makes the current moment a fascinating point in history to visit this surprisingly huge (Burma is roughly the same size as France) and relentlessly beautiful country.

We commence in the former capital of Mandalay, modern Burma's second city, set in the heart of the country on the banks of the mighty Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) River. The last Burmese king, Thibaw, was exiled from Mandalay in 1885 following the Third Anglo-Burmese War, and it is the remnants of his Konbaung Dynasty, and the preceding dynasties based in the vicinity, that make this a fantastic introduction to Burma. A day cruising gently downriver brings us to one of the region's most iconic and spectacular destinations, plains of Bagan. With over 2,000 individual pagodas and temples dating from the 11th to 13th century scattered across the landscape, Bagan provides a unique vista.

After the cultural and historic glories of Mandalay and Bagan, our next stop provides a marvellous counterpoint. Flying east to Heho, we head into the hills to Kalaw, a former British hill station set amongst a landscape of plantations, forests and minority villages. Burma has the world's greatest number of working elephants, principally working in the logging industry, and we will visit a sanctuary for retired elephants before continuing on to arguably the scenic highlight of the tour, Inle Lake.

Our tour ends in leafy Yangon, Burma's economic and diplomatic heart. Where better to bring our journey to a conclusion than with sunset at the spectacular Shwedagon pagoda, the most revered temple in this profoundly Buddhist country.

Depending on when you choose to travel, the tour may be timed to take advantage of one of Burma's exciting regional festivals. Our March departure catches the Shwedagon Pagoda Festival in Yangon, while our October departure coincides with the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival on Inle Lake. Festivals are when the local people are at their most open, friendly and relaxed, so either of these is sure to be a highlight of your trip.
