3 beautiful beaches in Cambodia

Boating in Koh Kong

Our Vicky recently returned from exploring Vietnam and Cambodia, where she was tasked with checking out some of Indochina’s less touristed spots. She found paradise on Cambodia’s coast. Read on to discover her highlights from the country’s beautiful beaches…

More to Cambodia than temples? Surely not!

Cambodia is famed for the Angkor temples, and rightly so, however there is much more that the country has to offer making it a great all-round destination. Heading towards the coast, away from the buzz of Phnom Penh and temple frenzy of Siem Reap you will find the less-visited – but none the less inviting – Koh Kong, Koh Rong and Kep. I absolutely loved these laid-back, beachy spots, and I’m pretty sure you will too!

Fabulous floating resorts

Hidden down the Tatai River in the Koh Kong Conservation Corridor, a half-day’s drive and 30 minutes’ boat ride from Phnom Penh, is the 4 Rivers Floating Lodge: a unique and delightful resort that is 100% floating!

With a real sense of remoteness with a touch of luxury, the 12 floating tent-style bungalows are spacious, en suite, equipped with modern conveniences, and have panoramic views of the Tatai River and its surroundings. From your private decking you can swim and kayak in the river – and for the more active there are nature walks and sunset boat trips to be enjoyed.

Undeveloped island escapes

Beautiful islands that are not be overrun by tourists are becoming few and far between, but Koh Rong is one of them. Accessible by speed boat from Sihanoukville, the island is home to just a few backpacker lodges and Sok San Resort. There are (of course) some plans to develop the island – but these are restricted to two upcoming 5* resorts, which will add a touch of class to the accommodation choices.

For now, Koh Rong is a fantastic place to while away the days on the vast white sandy beaches, snorkel in the turquoise waters or explore the island by quad bike or kayak!

The best crab in Cambodia

Famed for its seafood, the sleepy fishing town of Kep does not disappoint! The best way to experience this is to start with a morning visit to the crab market where you can watch the day unfold and the haggling begin. In the evening this is a great place for dinner, with numerous restaurants serving fantastic fresh crab combined with local Kampot pepper at extremely good value.

Seafood is not the only thing this charming town has to offer, however: there is also a stylish Art Deco-style hotel, beautiful sunsets, and various tropical islands within day trip distance.
