Pagodas and hot air ballonons at Bagan, Myanmar

Turn your ideas into a trip to Myanmar

Welcome to Myanmar, where farmers in ox-drawn carts tend rice paddies and golden stupas dot deserted plains. It’s the Asia of yesteryear where life plays out here as it has for centuries.

In many ways, Myanmar is the Asia of yesteryear. Paint peels from faded British-era villas, while neighbours gather at teahouses to gossip over chai poured from battered tin teapots. Longtail boats putter across lakes, deserted beaches stretch for miles, and almost every hill is topped with a pagoda.

For those who remember Southeast Asia 30 years ago, the sense of nostalgia is unmistakable — but Myanmar is no time warp. Change is in the air, and after decades of repressive military rule, the Burmese are looking to the future with excitement and optimism.

At this moment, Myanmar occupies a rare sweet spot between tradition and modernity. There are rickety trains and ox-drawn carts, but also comfortable private cars and reliable domestic flights. Faded colonial buildings and traditional stilt villages, but also Wi-Fi, smartphones, and great hotels. It’s different enough to feel adventurous, but not too adventurous to be uncomfortable — it makes for an enthralling place to travel.

Perhaps the most noticeable difference between Myanmar and its neighbours is visitors are still a novelty. From cheroot-smoking grannies to betel-chewing trishaw drivers, people are often as interested in you as you are in them, and their unguarded openness is a joy for visitors.

Visit Myanmar not to step back in time, but to witness a country in the throes of massive change: full of enthusiasm, drive, and curiosity about the outside world.
