Tangalle

For sleepy charm and uncrowded beaches, head west along the coast.

Tangalle lies at the end of Sri Lanka’s most popular stretch of beaches on the south coast, and it’s managed to retain its blissful tranquility. Here, roads twist through lush jungle down to secluded bays. You won’t find buzzy restaurants or raucous nightlife, just quiet beaches and toes-in-the-sand cafés serving up fresh seafood and coconuts. It’s a serene space for all, but the peaceful vibe mostly draws in honeymooners, families and retirees looking to kick back.

Each of the beaches in Tangalle offer something different. There’s Tangalle Beach, of course, and nearby Goyambokka is popular for its relaxed, natural beauty. Silent Beach is another favourite, with a wide run of soft, white sand sloping into turquoise waves. Just further along, Unakaruwa Beach is petite and peaceful, with a reef break that’s ideal for beginner surfers and a calm tide for little ones to splash around in. And you can’t beat Mawella Beach’s romantic setting for a sunset walk along the sand. If you’re hoping to mix things up with more of a backpacker aesthetic and a buzzy food scene, Hireketya is just a 40-minute drive away.
