Pasikudah

Known for its long shallow coastline and gentle waves, families flock to this east coast beach destination.

When it comes to tropical escapes, Sri Lanka’s south coast tends to get all the attention, and the east coast deserves more than it gets. Pasikudah is a picturesque example, with a soft white sandy bay curving around clear, turquoise water. Its sheltered position and gentle tide make it the ideal spot for swimming, snorkelling and sailing, and a favourite amongst families – just avoid the October-February monsoon season. While it's fringed by a string of upscale resorts and their manicured lawns, you’ll also see locals going for an evening stroll, saffron saris blowing in the breeze.

From Pasikudah, you can cycle through the surrounding villages or take the short drive to lesser known Batticaloa, for a wander around its old fort and lagoon. The beach can get busy in the high season, so if you’re looking for something more secluded, it’s just a 20-minute drive to the tranquil Kalkudah Beach. Backed by dense coconut groves and cashew plantations, this sandy bay is far less developed, so you can spread out, bask in the sun and watch the fishermen cast their nets.
